The right space can make all the difference for entrepreneurs working to ideate, create and build. Whether you want help building a prototype, are looking for a place to meet with mentors or need a cool spot to brainstorm with classmates, we have just the right space for you.

The J. Orin Edson Entrepreneurship + Innovation Institute hosts a network of creative spaces across ASU campuses and throughout the Phoenix metro area to help entrepreneurs build connections and community to help their ideas thrive.

At each of our five place-based innovation spaces (PBIS), the community managers understand that the concept of community takes center stage. Beyond the mere coexistence of individuals sharing physical space, there lies a deeper need for meaningful connections, collaboration, and a sense of belonging. As a community manager, cultivating this environment goes beyond logistics. It’s about fostering a culture where every member feels valued and empowered to thrive.

Here’s how the community managers at ASU’s J. Orin Edson Entrepreneurship + Innovation Institute try to build and sustain such a community within our coworking spaces.

Building Community

Member Events: Community managers play a pivotal role in orchestrating interactions that transcend co-working. Regular member events serve as crucial touchpoints where relationships blossom and ideas flow. By ensuring consistency in event scheduling and providing clear discussion topics, managers can facilitate meaningful exchanges. For those hesitant to participate, gentle encouragement and support can make all the difference in helping them find their voice within the community. 1:1 Mentoring: Understanding each member’s aspirations is foundational to effective community building. Taking time for individual meetings allows managers to delve into personal goals, provide tailored guidance, and connect coworkers with relevant resources. This not only fosters personal growth but also enhances collaborative efforts by aligning diverse talents towards shared objectives. Off-topic discussions during these sessions further humanize interactions, strengthening bonds beyond professional roles.

Introductions: As a community manager, initiating introductions among members can spark friendships and collaborations that extend past the workspace. Whether facilitating meetups, pairing coworkers as collaboration buddies, or forging connections based on mutual interests, these introductions create pathways for positive advancement and mutual support within the community.

Informal Networking: Breaking away from formalities, informal networking events provide a relaxed platform for members to connect authentically. These gatherings, infused with engaging topics and celebratory moments, not only foster camaraderie but also encourage active participation. The atmosphere set by the community manager plays a crucial role in ensuring these events feel welcoming and conducive to genuine interaction.

Setting the Tone

The tone set by the community manager defines the atmosphere of the space. By maintaining a balance of warmth, professionalism and inclusivity, managers can create an environment where creativity thrives and collaborations flourish naturally. Embracing flexibility allows for organic community growth while respecting the individual preferences of those who seek solitude or focused work.

At Edson E+I, setting the tone means more than just welcoming community members into a friendly space—we’re all about unique collaboration opportunities too. We work with our community to create accessible events tailored to a variety of interests, helping diverse business owners level up. Whether it’s our relaxed Pitch In events or insightful book-writing workshops at Author-Preneurship: Writer’s Meet Up, we’re here to support and grow alongside you, wherever you are in your journey.

Enhancing the Workspace Experience

Recognizing diverse work styles, our coworking spaces offer secluded areas for uninterrupted focus, complemented by amenities like a lending library and physical wellness tools. These thoughtful additions cater to holistic well-being, promoting a balanced work-life environment that nurtures productivity and creativity.

In essence, building a vibrant community within a coworking space hinges on genuine connections, facilitated interactions, and a supportive environment cultivated by dedicated community managers. Beyond providing a place to work, we aim to foster a community where each member feels valued, inspired and empowered to achieve their fullest potential. Together, we create not just a workspace, but a home for collaboration and meaningful connections that extend far beyond office walls.
