News Brief: ASU students’ venture on top at Euro innovation competition

How many Arizona State University student entrepreneurs does it take to develop a solution for parents and nannies to share photos and videos of a child’s memorable moments, share critical information on the go, and keep track of a child’s activities and schedules?

Balloon Balloon, named one of the top startups at this year’s European Innovation Academy (EIA), needed only two ASU student ‘treps — Megan Kirk and Elizabeth Oviedo — in addition to three team mates from universities across the world, to develop a secure online platform that allows parents to connect with their children’s nannies directly.

The startup was conceptualized and launched in only three weeks at the Academy, which was held in Nice, France this summer. The EIA is a super-accelerated entrepreneurship bootcamp that brings together students from universities all over the world to learn from and train with the best experts from well-known companies, such as Google, Spotify and Rovio Entertainment (the Angry Birds company).

Megan and Elizabeth did have solid training, though, to help them hit the ground running at the EIA. They first met at Lean Launch, a course for students interested in launching startups, which is led by Sidnee Peck, director of W. P. Carey School of Business’ Center for Entrepreneurship.
