To empower students to become health innovators who create real solutions to real problems, the Health Innovation Virtual Internship launched to provide students a hands-on opportunity in a virtual environment as a pivot to the coronavirus pandemic that hit in March 2020.
With schools and workplaces transitioning into virtual environments and most extracurricular activities canceled, Arizona State University’s Health Entrepreneurship Accelerator Lab (HEALab) saw an opportunity to provide a unique virtual experience in lieu of a traditional summer internship program.
In May 2020, 77 undergraduate and high school students located in 14 different U.S. states and three other countries completed the program. Students worked on a variety of projects from highly technical tasks like competitive analysis for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine research or developing a MATLAB script to analyze cardiological data to identifying community health resources in an area or conducting digital and social media marketing campaigns.
The internship made a lasting impact on not only the students but the companies as well. Elyse Blaze of Securisyn Medical said, “Our company hosted four interns. Each intern and staff supervisor expressed great satisfaction with the program citing strong educational value for the student, and completion of a value-added project deliverable for each department of the company. We would definitely participate in this program again!”
Due to its overwhelming success, the Health Innovation Virtual Internship is back again for Summer 2021.
For anyone ages 16 and over, including high school juniors and seniors, undergraduate and graduate students, the HEALab is offering a three-week virtual internship, Thursday, June 3 through Friday, June 25, 2021.
As interns, students will have the opportunity to apply knowledge from their coursework and gain real-world experience in working with a health innovation organization or startup to help them achieve their goals by supporting marketing, operations, research, or similar efforts.
The internship will begin with training from subject matter experts during which students will learn industry-related knowledge and skills required for successful career advancement in health innovation. Supervisors will provide the intern(s) a job description that includes a detailed explanation of duties/projects.
Supervisors will then work with the intern(s) to develop a plan to ensure that the established goals are met, and check in regularly throughout the internship to see if the intern is on track to meet these goals. Upon completion of the internship, students will have submitted a tangible project to the organization, and a short PowerPoint presentation summarizing their experience.
This internship is not for credit and participating businesses are not required to pay students. Students who successfully complete the internship will receive a certificate of completion and a letter of recommendation from HEALab. Businesses are welcome to hire students for work outside of the internship and beyond should there be need and interest.
