From Pen to Profit: Meet Arizona’s Thriving Author-preneurs

For authors, a book is more than just words on a page. It’s a universe of potential. In Arizona, a vibrant community of authors and resources in the Author-preneurship community is transforming their creativity into thriving businesses. 

From romance authors to audiobook narrators to local newsrooms and independent bookstores, Arizona creatives are finding innovative ways to expand their impact and revenue streams. With an enormous pool of local knowledge and experience—including writing communities, publishing houses, and entrepreneurial support systems—local authors are well-positioned to turn their passion for storytelling into sustainable ventures. 

Here’s an inside look at some of the authors and resources within Edson E+I’s Author-preneurship community, along with the tools available to support their success—and yours. Local Authors to support and connect with:

Kathy Cano-Murillo (Crafty Chica)

Kathy is not only the Latina “creativepreneur” behind the Crafty Chica brand, but is also an author of over 12 books, including best-seller “Forever Frida.” She has built her passion into a thriving business that allows her to take her creativity and turn it into a colorful and successful venture. Her social media pages are overflowing with followers craving the inspiration to turn their own creativity into a moneymaker. You can find Crafty Chica goods and books at Barnes & Noble, Michaels, and hundreds of pottery, fabric and craft stores across the country!

Eboniè P. Fields

After seeing a gap in the children’s book market for children of color, Eboniè decided to fill that gap with her own books. Eboniè has now written three children’s books in the Magical Hummingbird Series and started Ebby’s Book House, where she inspires and motivates writers of all ages to master the art of creative writing. Through her guidance, clients learn to paint vivid pictures with words, embrace the rhythm of language, and develop key writing skills to unleash their creative potential. Ebby also offers classes, editing services and marketing and media consulting. 

Ginger Scott

Best-selling author Ginger Scott writes romance books with underlying themes of sports. Her heartfelt young adult and contemporary romance stories have relatable characters and emotional plots that have won over readers. Ginger’s books dive into themes like love, resilience and finding yourself, making them a favorite for fans of all ages. Ginger was part of the original series that inspired the E+I Author-preneurship program and has continued to support this thriving community.

Peppur Chambers

Peppur Chambers is a storyteller, author and actress with a passion for empowering women through her work. She is known for her sassy and heartfelt style, and she’s the creator of Harlem’s Awakening and the Brown Betties brand, which celebrates bold, confident femininity. Whether she’s writing, performing or inspiring others, Peppur brings creativity and authenticity to everything she does. Peppur was one of the first authors engaged in the E+I Author-preneurship program and has been a part of it ever since.

C.B. Wilson

C.B.’s books are a must-read for dog lovers and mystery lovers alike. Her Barkview Mystery Series was inspired by her couch-potato mom getting a Jack Russell Terrier and her love of Nancy Drew. Since then, she’s used her writing to teach about different dog breeds while also giving readers a nice, “cozy mystery.” Her newest book, Labradored to Death, features a minor league baseball bat dog and she is using the launch of this book to advocate for bringing the minor league bat dogs up to the major leagues! 

Barbara Hinske

Barbara was the first annual Author-preneurship event’s keynote speaker and has continued to grow ever since. After leaving her role as a lawyer, she pursued a career as an author and has written many different book series that vary from novels to novellas (one of which has even been turned into a Hallmark Christmas movie). Her Guiding Emily series is her claim to fame and is a great introduction to Barbara Hinske’s books. 

Aisha Marshall

Aisha is a podcaster, designer, Forbes 30 under 30 honoree, speaker, educator and author of the Butterfly SZN Guided Journal. Her creative entrepreneurship journey has led her to build a successful agency where she’s known for her innovative approach to marketing and her dedication to empowering women of color in the creative industry.

Pat Gillum

Pat Gillum is a speaker, author, coach and publisher who’s all about helping women live their best lives. She founded The Sisterhood Extravaganza to empower women to connect, grow and thrive. Through her publishing work, Pat helps women share their stories and make their voices heard, inspiring confidence and leadership every step of the way.

Parul Agrawal

Parul is a bestselling author, publisher and entrepreneur who’s passionate about helping people share their stories with the world. She’s the founder of a successful publishing company that’s helped countless authors turn their ideas into books that inspire and connect. Parul loves empowering writers to own their voices and build their brands while making the publishing process fun and accessible. Parul’s book, “The Growth Hacking Book” brought together entrepreneurs from across the globe to publish marketing secrets and instantly became an international bestseller. 

TKMV Studios

Tony and his team at TKMV Studios specialize in illustration, 3D design and film and are the go-to resource for book illustrations. TKMV Studio is a creative hub that specializes in helping entrepreneurs, authors and businesses tell their stories through bold and innovative visuals. From eye-catching branding to professional photography and video production, TKMV Studio brings ideas to life with a personal touch. 

Melissa Del Toro Schaffner

Melissa’s motto is “You’ll Love What You Hear,” and she makes sure of it. Whether she’s narrating audiobooks, hosting her podcast, or editing, she brings stories to life with her voice. From fun cartoon characters to professional corporate vibes, Melissa delivers versatile, friendly and memorable bilingual voiceovers in American English and Neutral Spanish. As a former electrical engineer, she loves the professional-grade equipment she gets to use to produce.

POP (Phoenix Oasis Press)

An inspiring hub for Arizona’s writers, whether they are just starting out, an established author or someone who’s not sure they’re even a writer yet. Their mission is simple: to provide low or no-cost resources that help writers create, improve their craft, share their stories, and connect with a supportive, vibrant community. From workshops and writing groups to one-on-one coaching, POP is all about fostering growth and creativity, offering a safe and welcoming space for writers of all levels to explore and develop their talents.

Grassrootz Bookstore and Juice Bar

Grassrootz Bookstore is more than just a place to buy books—it’s a community hub in Phoenix celebrating Black culture, stories and history. They offer a carefully curated selection of books, art and merchandise that highlight Black authors and creators. Beyond the shelves, Grassrootz hosts events, workshops and discussions, creating a space for learning, connection and empowerment. It’s a spot where culture, education and community come together.

LOOKOUT Publications

LOOKOUT Phoenix is all about lifting up LGBTQ+ artists, writers and entrepreneurs in the Phoenix area as well as sharing the news that is not always reported on in mainstream media. They create spaces for people to share their stories, express themselves and connect with others. The platform also isn’t afraid to hold those in power accountable, using art and activism to push for change and justice. With events, workshops, and collaborations, LOOKOUT Phoenix is helping to amplify diverse voices while fighting for equality and empowerment.
