A learning opportunity, good mentor relationships are often ongoing and developed over time.&nbsp; Unlike coaching, which is typically a shorter and more focused relationship (<a href=\"https:\/\/tdr.entrepreneurship.asu.edu\/course\/when-do-i-need-a-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">learn more here<\/a>), mentorship is a reflective relationship that is deeply personalized and often not as specific to one particular goal.&nbsp; When connecting with a mentor, you may focus on your entrepreneurial goals specifically or connect about overall life experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"highlight-gold\">Who can be my mentor?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While there are formal programs that sometimes provide specific mentorship connections, the relationships can also occur informally.&nbsp; It is likely that you have had someone serve as a mentor in your life.&nbsp; This person may have asked you intentional questions, encouraged reflection when discussing your hopes and goals, or served as a role model from a distance, modeling behavior with their actions that you aspire to be like in some way within your own life.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about the people who have served as mentors, or inspiration in your life, what are some of the qualities of the relationship(s) and how did it grow over time?&nbsp;<meta charset=\"utf-8\">A mentor can be close in age or stage of life to you, but is often assumed to be more knowledgeable in some way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the time feels right for you, <em><strong>ask someone to be your<\/strong> <strong>mentor<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; identify who in your network best aligns with your goals and lived experiences and reach out to them. Consider including the following details: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"uds-list wp-block-list\"><li>Why you are seeking mentorship<\/li><li>why you think they&#8217;re the right mentor for you<\/li><li>What they might gain from being your mentor<\/li><li>How you&#8217;d like to structure the relationship. <br><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"highlight-gold\">Ideally, mentorship is&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-row row\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-12\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<ul class=\"uds-list wp-block-list\"><li>Mutually beneficial for everyone involved (the mentor and the mentee)<\/li><li>Something that can enhance your career and personal development, and encourages social skills<\/li><li>A learning opportunity that is directed by the mentee.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-asu-gray-3-background-color has-background has-small-font-size\"><em>Keep in mind<\/em>: a mentor is <strong>not<\/strong> there to do the work for you, and a mentor should <strong>not<\/strong> have a seat on your board or receive monetary gain from your venture.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"highlight-gold\">If seeking mentorship, consider:<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What are some broad goals\/outcomes you might want from this ongoing relationship?<\/strong> &nbsp;If the goals you identify are very specific and narrow, they might be better suited for <a href=\"https:\/\/tdr.entrepreneurship.asu.edu\/course\/when-do-i-need-a-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coaching.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How comfortable are you sharing your experience and reflecting?<\/strong> Mentorship requires active listening, consideration of multiple perspectives and individual efforts to get the most benefit out of the conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Are there people that you already consider mentors in your life?<\/strong>&nbsp; If yes, you can consider how to more regularly connect with that individual.&nbsp; If someone inspires you but doesn\u2019t have the capacity to engage in ongoing mentorship, they might recommend someone else within their network that could also help provide perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"highlight-gold\">How to be a mentor?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As a mentor, you accept personal responsibility to help the growth of others without needing the end result \u2013i.e. the personal growth of your mentee\u2014to look a specific way.&nbsp; Competency, trustworthiness, and a time commitment are all expectations of someone acting as a mentor.&nbsp; Specific functions, can include:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-row row\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-12\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<ul class=\"uds-list wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Relational:<\/strong> understanding and development of trust<\/li><li><strong>Informative:<\/strong> plans and progress as it relates to goals; guide by asking questions<\/li><li><strong>Facilitate:<\/strong> new options, alternative views; expanded learning and perspectives<\/li><li><strong>Confront:<\/strong> respectfully challenge [if\/when appropriate]<\/li><li>Mentor as a <strong>role model<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Encourage vision<\/strong> of the mentee; increased ownership for current and future goals<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"highlight-gold\">Additional resources:<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"uds-grid-links two-columns \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalancecareers.com\/qualities-of-a-good-mentor-1986663\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga=\"Eight qualities of a good mentor\" data-ga-name=\"onclick\" data-ga-event=\"link\" data-ga-action=\"click\" data-ga-type=\"external link\" data-ga-region=\"main content\" data-ga-section=\"grid links\">Eight qualities of a good mentor<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90457557\/mentoring-is-worth-your-time-heres-how-you-can-be-great-at-it\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga=\"Mentoring is worth your time.
