We\u2019re glad you asked. Mentorship is a relationship built over time, focused on achieving long-term growth (<a href=\"https:\/\/tdr.entrepreneurship.asu.edu\/course\/when-do-i-need-a-mentor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">learn more here<\/a>). Coaching is short-term and is focused on a specific goal or objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to seek coaching<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve identified a <strong>specific area where you need support<\/strong> and know you would benefit from the perspective or know-how of an expert in that area, you might be ready for a coach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seek a coach that has <strong>proven experience and a successful track record<\/strong> in the specific area in which you\u2019re seeking support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-copy-divider\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to find a coach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Coaches are all around you, be it an experienced entrepreneur, a business coach for hire, or a subject matter expert working in areas that align with your idea and venture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Identifying the right coaches for you is a long-term strategy. Be intentional about building a community of support. The best way to do this is to engage in your local entrepreneurial ecosystem. Attend events, programs, and workshops to make connections and share your needs. Your coach could be in the room, or someone might be able to connect you with the right person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Building relationships takes time, but the connections you make will be a valuable asset at each stage of your entrepreneurial journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Not sure where to get started?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"uds-list wp-block-list\"><li>Connect with local&nbsp;entrepreneurship&nbsp;support&nbsp;organizations&nbsp;in your area. Search online for other active entreprneurship orgnaizations near you. Orin Edson Entrepreneurship + Innovation Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.asu.edu\/events\/2022-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">events page<\/a> are good places to start. <\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/myhuub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HUUB<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/localfirstaz.com\/business-support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Local First Arizona<\/a> offer coaching and technical assistance opportunities, depending on your location in Arizona. <\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/wabccoaches.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Visit the&nbsp;Worldwide Association of Business Coaches<\/a>&nbsp;site and search for an accredited business coach in your area.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-copy-divider\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to be coached<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"uds-list wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Come Prepared:<\/strong> it\u2019s important to have an end goal in mind for your coaching experience and to share that goal with your coach. Know what you hope to achieve and this will guide the conversation.<\/li><li><strong>Set Expectations: <\/strong>to make the most of your coaching sessions, align your expectations. Consider aligning on areas such as your urgent needs, how frequently you\u2019d like to communicate, and how in-depth your coach\u2019s feedback will be. Also consider talking with your coach about how you plan to incorporate their feedback and recommendations. If you\u2019re only looking for feedback on a specific element of your entrepreneurial journey, be upfront that you\u2019re not accepting feedback on other areas.<\/li><li><strong>Ask Specific Questions: <\/strong>coaches help you to address a specific challenge you\u2019re facing or to achieve a specific goal. The questions you ask your coach should be in alignment with these goals. We\u2019ve included a list of questions below to help you kick start your relationship with your coach.<\/li><li><strong>Know Your Coach: <\/strong>be sure to research your coach\u2019s background and have a sense of their areas of expertise. This background will help guide the specific questions you ask.<\/li><li><strong>Contextualize Feedback:<\/strong> your coach\u2019s experience won\u2019t be your experience. It\u2019s important to draw parallels and make connections between your experience and your coach\u2019s experience, rather than assuming your experiences will be the same.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-copy-divider\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Best practices when being coached&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"uds-list wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Follow-up <strong>with your coach on how you\u2019ve applied their advice and feedback, and share the results.<\/strong><\/strong> This helps your coach refine their approach and feel valued and motivated to continue investing in the relationship.<\/li><li><strong>Don&#8217;t <strong>be afraid to drive the conversation.<\/strong> <\/strong>Ensuring your success is what motivates your coach.
