CHANDLER INNOVATIONS TO HOST SECOND ANNUAL STARTUP CONNECTION, SEPT. 20-21
Free Event to Feature Workshops, Panel Discussions and Resources to Help Startups Their Firms

Entrepreneurs can grow their networks while honing their skills in everything from forecasting and financing to branding and building a team at the second annual Startup Connection, Sept. 20-21, in Chandler.

The free two-day event is being hosted by Chandler Innovations, the entrepreneurial development program that promotes the creation and sustainable growth of startups through ongoing mentorship and tech-focused business development curriculum and events.

Steve Reese, chief information officer of the Phoenix Suns, will kick off the event on Sept. 20 with a keynote address that traces the evolution of IT in business and sports from the “fix-it” crew to company innovators. That will be followed by a Shark Tank-style competition at which three companies will pitch their concepts to a panel of esteemed judges.

Then on Sept. 21, participants can immerse themselves in a series of interactive workshops, roundtables and panel discussions with startup and small-business experts.

“We are thrilled to bring together entrepreneurs, investors, industry experts and thought leaders to help companies that are the backbone of our economy,” said Diana White, CEO of Chandler Innovations.

Chandler Innovations is sponsored by the City of Chandler and powered by Moonshot at NACET, a Flagstaff-based nonprofit that helps aspiring entrepreneurs turn big ideas into successful businesses and assists nonprofit leaders and cities in developing entrepreneurial ecosystems.

“Entrepreneurial spirit and forward-thinking leaders have shaped our city into a community of innovation,” said Chandler Councilmember Mark Stewart. “Through the Startup Connection, we can bring together the resources needed to help local entrepreneurs learn how they can build the next major company right here."

The city and Fennemore Craig are the event’s featured sponsors. Arizona State University is the facility’s partner and the Chandler Chamber of Commerce and other event supporters also are involved in the event.

The term circular economy continues to gain traction in the private sector across Europe and the United States as a powerful approach to product and service development, urban infrastructure and economic development for maximum resource efficiency and effectiveness by closing loops in design, distribution and disposal of products and materials. An Ethical Circular Economy emphasizes systems thinking, social values, impact and equity through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals in addition to the traditional approach to circular economy. This interactive Tutorial will be facilitated by circular economy, innovation and sustainability experts from Arizona State University, which was named the nation’s most innovative university in the US for four straight years by US News and World Report.

GreenBiz 19 In-Depth Tutorials are intensive half-day sessions held prior to the start of the conference. These are designed to offer participants an opportunity to dive deeper into a topic of interest and develop tangible knowledge and skills. In addition, attendees will have a greater opportunity to network with their peers in these interactive sessions. Concurrent tutorials will be held the morning of Tuesday, February 26, and are available only to those who purchase an All Access Pass.

Innovating mental healthcare through social entrepreneurship and transdisciplinary approaches
Featured Speaker: Ryan Stoll, founder of COMPASS for Courage

Despite anxiety being the most prevalent mental health concern in children and teens, nearly 80% of anxious youth don’t receive any help that works due to the lack of accessible and effective tools for communities. COMPASS for Courage seeks to solve this problem by re-packaging the best available evidence-based tools for reducing youth anxiety into a consumer-focused solution, blending science, design, marketing, and social entrepreneurship. Ryan Stoll, ASU PhD Candidate, will discuss the journey moving COMPASS from lab to community, highlighting both the potential and challenges of transdisciplinary approaches in health innovation and lasting social change.

Ryan D. Stoll is a PhD candidate in clinical psychology, co-creator of COMPASS for Courage, and founder of Obeo Wellbeing, a social impact business committed to improving the public health impact of mental health research by re-packaging the science into effective and sustainable tools for people, organizations, and communities. COMPASS for Courage is Obeo’s first product.
