The event was held at New City Church in Downtown Phoenix, was attended by 175+ guests, seven of the Valley\u2019s top chefs and food industry leaders, including Larry \u2018LoLo\u2019 White from LoLos Chicken and Waffles, Tim Salgado from MATCH at the Found: RE and Eric Henderson of Upward Projects.\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_833\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-833\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.asu.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/06\/BLOG.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" style=\"max-width: 100%;display: block;\" class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-833\" src=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.asu.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/06\/BLOG-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Chef Pedro Ortiz plating up his food.\" srcset=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.asu.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/06\/BLOG-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/entrepreneurship.asu.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/06\/BLOG-768x1153.jpg 768w, https:\/\/entrepreneurship.asu.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/06\/BLOG-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/entrepreneurship.asu.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/06\/BLOG-420x630.jpg 420w, https:\/\/entrepreneurship.asu.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/06\/BLOG.jpg 1066w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-833\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><br> Chef Pedro Ortiz plating up his food.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n21 entrepreneurs participated in the competition by providing samples to the audience and pitching their business to the judges. The food businesses ranged from Taco trucks with locally sourced ingredients, to hickory smoked BBQ and Ceviche catering companies, to a Native owned coffee cooperative. Three \u201cRising Stars\u201d were given for $2,000 each and one overall showcase award winner was awarded $5,000. The Rising Star Awardees were:\r\n\r\n\u2022 Terre Botanicals, herbal infused salts and sugars for cooking\r\n\u2022 Chef Krystal Fitness, plant based baked goods\r\n\u2022 Wings Like Eagles, catering sweet and savory chicken wings\r\n\r\nThe Overall Showcase Winner was Tukee\u2019s Tamales, cultural Mexican cuisine with a loving customer base in Ahwatukee. See them receive the award here: <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2qXEvoj\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/2qXEvoj<\/a>\r\n\r\nThe judges were impressed by the quality of the food, the passion of the entrepreneurs and the strength of their business model. One of the judges, a successful restaurant owner, said that if she were going to invest, she would invest in them without hesitation. Overall, the judges were moved by the drive and talent of the whole group and expressed their support for the program and its goals.\r\n\r\nMany community partners attended the event and were blown away by the talent and potential that they witnessed. Because they attended the showcase, we have been able to concretize partnerships with three new organizations\/companies.
