Not only can an entrepreneur generate revenue, but they can also give back to the community alongside their business activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Understanding Social Entrepreneurship<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A true social entrepreneur is a founder who sets out to solve a problem that has a social issue at its core. Other entrepreneurs might simply wish to contribute to a social cause and influence positive changes through special campaigns or planned giving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bringing social entrepreneurship to new businesses is a growing trend worldwide. According to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/initiatives.weforum.org\/global-alliance-for-social-entrepreneurship\/home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Global Alliance for Social Entrepreneurship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, there are an estimated 10 million social <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">enterprises globally, with $2 trillion in annual revenue. These social enterprises are estimated to have created 200 million jobs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Worldwide, one in five organizations are run by women as CEOs. That number jumps for social entrepreneurs, with half of the organizations trying to do good in the world being run by women. Another study by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor noted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gemconsortium.org\/news\/new-gem-usa-report-highlights-increases-in-entrepreneurship-and-startup-intentions#:~:text=Over%20two%2Dthirds%20of%20entrepreneurs,businesses%20above%20profitability%20or%20growth.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that 68% of entrepreneurs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201cindicate that they prioritize social and\/or environmental impact of their business above profitability or growth\u201d with 54% of established business owners stating this also is a part of their business model.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We asked a few entrepreneurs who have a social entrepreneurship component to their work what they are doing towards positive social change. All work frequently in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.asu.edu\/spaces\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Place-Based Innovation Spaces.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>Meet Charlotte Bowens of Conscious Gear<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:36% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"574\" height=\"633\" src=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.asu.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/03\/ASU-Blog-Assets-Social-Ent-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4032 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.asu.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/03\/ASU-Blog-Assets-Social-Ent-3.jpg 574w, https:\/\/entrepreneurship.asu.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/03\/ASU-Blog-Assets-Social-Ent-3-272x300.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 574px) 100vw, 574px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Charlotte Bowens, Founder of Conscious Gear<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/conscious-gear.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Conscious Gear<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is an outdoor gear and outwear company focused on making more size-inclusive products, specifically for those outdoor enthusiasts with bigger bodies. They celebrate body diversity in the outdoors and do so with their flagship product VestaPak, which is the<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">world\u2019s first hydration vest designed for bigger bodies. The VestaPak was highlighted in the USA Today as a top 10 outdoor product. For Conscious Gear, inclusivity, hydration, and eco-friendly outdoor use are core to their mission pillars. They want to make sure that everyone, no matter their size, race, sex, age, gender, ability, neurodiversity, and any aspect of human uniqueness are able to experience the outdoors and stay hydrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI believe that innovation requires that we take into consideration the needs of our communities. Otherwise what\u2019s so innovative about what we are doing?\u201d said Charlotte Young Bowens, founder of Conscious Gear. She notes that this not only considers the people she serves, but also the planet as well. Founder Enuma Igweatu is a Harvard-educated prevention scientist and certified coach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her company\u2019s mission is to provide personalized coaching, professional development, and empowerment events to encourage ambitious women of color to thrive. She Thrivin\u2019 holds events, private workshops, speaking engagements, and also has a podcast to help support women of color who are early-stage entrepreneurs, mid-career professionals in transition, and seasoned business leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are the creators and catalysts for change,\u201d Igweatu said. She said that when you infuse your business \u201cwith a sense of purpose and commitment to social responsibility,\u201d you \u201chave the power to create new realities for our communities and directly address societal needs in innovative and sustainable ways.\u201d Igweatu noticed that the women she serves are often the \u201crole models, mentors, and agents for positive change within their families, workplaces and broader communities.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Often, the challenge for her clients is that they are \u201cbalancing a multitude of responsibilities, wrestling with exhaustion and depletion, overcoming cultural and societal expectations, fighting for their own needs to be acknowledged and met\u201d while learning to find balance in their lives.
