Innovation Challenge winners announced

Under the soft glow of chandeliers in Old Main's Carson Ballroom, student innovators  stood to the applause and cheers of their peers, mentors, friends and supporters.

This year, 16 teams were selected from thirty finalists to win grants, the culmination of the Innovation Challenge, a funding opportunity for ASU students looking to make a difference in the local and global communities.

“Launch something.”

That’s the response from Hackspace community director Stephen Murphey when asked what, exactly, one is supposed to do with a “hack space.”

Networkshop aims to bolster social entrepreneurship

About 40 faculty, staff, administrators and community leaders came together at SkySong, ASU’s innovation center, for a half-day networkshop focused on bolstering and growing social entrepreneurship in Arizona.

ASU co-sponsored the gathering with Social Venture Partners Arizona, a philanthropic organization dedicated to bringing together professionals and nonprofit organizations to help build connections. Among the attendees were representatives from a diverse blend of ASU schools, colleges and programs, as well as local nonprofit and social venture groups.

Two ASU graduate students and Innovation Challenge finalists are working on innovative measures to help combat a disease ravaging South America, combining the fields of molecular biology and advanced mathematics in hopes of saving lives through their new project.

Consider this: during the 2011 Superbowl, 4,064 tweets were sent in a split second as the game drew to a close.
